The Creative Live! Cam Optia Pro webcam is the BEST webcam I have ever owned! After reading several reviews of different webcams on this site, I was determined to make an "educated" selection.

My brother called me last week, to tell me he had finally bought a webcam - this, after years of my pleading for him to get one (I live in Portland, OR. He lives in Dallas, TX). My brother convinced me he purchased a pretty good camera for around $15.00. Armed with specification criteria, I labored compiling a stack of the best selections in my price range.

I set a budget of $25 for my selection, and headed to the nearest " electronics superstore" in the city. I patiently waited for a "technician" to help me compare features (resolution, reliability, durability, and software features).

After about 20 minutes of waiting, I teamed up with another customer to isolate the best specs under $25.00. Finally, the "technician" showed up. It amazes me how many people sell complicated electronics, and know so little about them. The guy said he favored the Gear Head I-Level Webcam. I had never heard of Gear Head (let alone a $79.99 I-Level webcam). I wound up buying a cheaper cam, by the same manufacturer.

I got home, loaded the software, connected the camera, and was AMAZED at the indiscernible image that showed up on my screen! I repackaged the cam and software, drove 17 miles (again) to the "superstore", and tried to stay composed. Armed with more internet research and amazon.com reviews, I was determined to buy either a Creative or Logitech webcam.

I discovered the Optia Pro retailed for $79.99, was on sale for $59.99, and this weekend the manufacturer offered a $30 mail-in rebate. To avoid anymore contributions to the petroleum industry, I loaded the software onto my laptop (in the car), connected the camera, and voila! the most clear, properly exposed picture I've ever seen on a webcam. The technical specs for this camera blew every webcam in my previous stack away. I wanted to advise the "clerks" of the time and gas I had wasted, but I knew it would only make me angrier.

The biggest consolation of the entire fiasco was the satisfaction of hearing (and seeing) my brother's reaction, during our first web chat. He was visibly blown away. He brought his 6-year-old son in, and I checked a box in the camera software. "Poof" , I was talking to his son from the cockpit of a digital space ship! We've had 2 more web meetings in the 2 days since I bought the camera. I know I will be purchasing this camera again for my two sons, living in Georgia soon.

The quality of the video, the software offerings (including face-tracking), and the handy cloth travel bag were an excellent package - and all for a final price of $29.99 (just $4 over the price I had budgeted). Honestly, the construction of the cam, coupled with the software offerings, makes this product worth its suggested retail price. Finding it at such a sale price, only sweetened the deal. Stop searching; this one is the "real deal"!!!
