Good webcam for video conferencing November 2, 2007

I do a lot of work with video conferencing and found the Creative Webcam Instant to be an excellent choice for the price (under $20). I presume the low price is a result of this being a discontinued item, but this webcam performs on par with other webcams costing as much as $75 or more. My 4-star rating is based purely on performance, not on price. It gave me 22-26 frames per second (FPS) during a FaceToFaceMeeting video call, so the video was nearly full motion, fluid and very comfortable. The auto white balance worked well and didn't zap the performance (like some do). Video image quality is good, better than average at 320x240 (CIF) resolution. At full screen the image gets rather noisy, but still usable. There is no built-in microphone, but that's a good thing as built-in microphones tend to produce a lot of echo. This webcam comes bundled with a headset, single over the ear type, may take some getting used to. The field of vision is more narrow than my other favorite webcam, so this is better suited to personal use (one person at a time in front of the camera). I don't know how well it performs in low light conditions, I only tested in a well-lighted office environment. For any webcam though, proper lighting is essential for good image quality. Overall, I am pleased with this product.
