Disappointed September 16, 2008 Anastasia (Australia) I had high hopes for this book. I have purchased previous Norman Phillips books and found them very useful and educational. Unfortunately, Norm continues to use some of the same, tired photos in this book that he has in others, and I don't think Norm has updated his photographic style in the last 20 years - his images are tired, dull and uninspired. FORTUNATELY, this book is rescued and the reader kept interested by some outstanding portraits by some other photographers who have done a terriffic job. In fact, this book, in contrast to his 'Lighting Techniques for High Key Portrait Photography' and 'Lighting Techniques for Low Key Portrait Photography', has a very great deal more images in it. In fact, it is outstanding in that way. Something else I really appreciated was the final chapter on 'Glamor in Middle Key' because it featured didigtally enhanced images and showed how to go from ordinary to nice through the application of digital enhancements. All in all, the book is OK, but if you can read it from the library I'd suggest saving your money... that or read it and sell it when you're done. It is nice to have all three of his books for lighting in all keys (High, Middle and Low), but now that I've got them I can't see myself buying another Norman Phillips book. His work is just too provincial, too ordinary, and too outdated. I certainly would not hire him to take photos of myself and my children. I think I'm ranting too far here... I gave it 3 stars only because of the inclusion of SO many images and the fact that there are some really good ones in there by other photographers that can actually inspire me. When it comes to teaching lighting techniques, yep, it's good.

Middle key for a variety of circumstances August 30, 2008 Dawn Johns (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
An interesting and informative book dedicated to a subject that little is written about makes this a nice addition to any photographer's collection. Examples from many leading photographers include diagrams covering all elements, such as placement of light, in the final image. Also covered is equipment and its usage which ties in the options to increase the dynamic affect to create a more appealing image.
