Product Description
Know who you are and be it. Celebrate your uniqueness with passion and conviction. This is the powerful philosophy at the heart of more than thirty years of Gap advertising-ads that have created an indelible imprint on American pop culture. Virtually every icon from every artistic field has sat for a Gap ad, and Individuals brings the best of these together for the first time. Kim Basinger, Brandon Boyd, Danny Glover, Dominick Dunne, Heather Graham, Scarlett Johansson, B.B. King, Ashton Kutcher, Karl Lagerfeld, and Michelle Williams are just some of the influential icons featured.

4 out of 5 stars great portraits   October 26, 2007
S. Phung (SLC, UT USA)
I have always loved the photography of GAP. THis book is filled with great images. It's a great book to look at. The images in this book have a great candid feel to them. The stars and celebs don't come across to dolled up. Very real, not super glamourized shots.

5 out of 5 stars A great coffee table book   July 29, 2007
Stephen McHenry (Olney, MD USA)
I have noticed that this book generates a lot of mild interest as a casual-leaf-through coffee table type book by people who visit us. The cover is denim, different and holds up well, the photos are all celebrities, nearly all very well done, and everyone remembers some of the ads. When these ads for The Gap first appeared, it was a new groundbreaking, black and white, celebrities in real person's clothing, everyone-can-be-cool message that caught attention and had staying power. This book has all that brought together with some history of The Gap and the ad campaign. The same book has 4 different covers, so don't get confused and buy 4 copies thinking they are different.
Done by a variety of photographers, mostly black and white, some colour, some drawings, this book is a good example of portraiture, posing and lighting with simple backgrounds.

5 out of 5 stars Social Activism, Iconic Portraiture and great music all in one!   May 12, 2007

This edition was a definate surprise. First, the copy I received was bound in red fabric (not purple as pictured) and was centered with a portrait of Willie Nelson. When removing the protective plastic I then saw that this book is part of the Gap's PRODUCT (RED) campaign with Bono and that GAP's profit from the book will be used to help fight AIDS in Africa (an unexpected plus). If this info had been posted on Aamazon as part of the item description I probably would have bought it sooner.

About the book itself: It is great. Some classiccelebrity portraiture by the likes of Herb Ritz, Anie Leibovitz and others. If someone were to ask me for a great example of portraiture from 1990-2000's I would recomend this book o them without hesitation! Oh yeah, another bonus: Inside the back cover is a music CD of some of the more popular songs used in Gap ads from the Past two decades.

So, to sum up: For just a few bucks you get a great refernece source for modern portraiture (also a great coffee table book), social activism and a kickin soundtrack. Is that a deal or what?

1 out of 5 stars Another lame and tired branding exercise   April 13, 2007

i give it a great big "who cares." it's an interesting concept if it were for a smaller brand like diesel or a brand with some really credible history like levis. what would make this good is if it contained tons of outtakes or behind the scenes stories behind the photos as well. that might be kind of cool, but who really wants to own this? i'm sure it will sell some copies just because it's out there, but this is the kind of book you buy someone at work when you don't know what to get them for a secret santa present or someone who is a friend of a friend. blah.

5 out of 5 stars Best Coffe Table Book   February 27, 2007
Hollywood Glitter (Anaheim, CA United States)

I'd have to consider this one of my favorite coffee table books af all time. Gap has been drawing us in with such simple, great quality photos
for more than thirty years. What a great way to remeber all of them. So many people from so many walks of life. This book includes essays from some surprising people and a cd with some memorable music from the commercials. The best thing has to be all proceeds are used for Product Red, a global fund to help women and children in Africa
