5 out of 5 stars Nice camera   January 9, 2009
M. Mowery (Owosso, mi United States)
Bought this camera for my wife. She carries it in her purse at all times and uses it a lot. The picture quality at 10mp is quite good as long as you have adequate light. In low light it does tend to be a little noisy if you make large prints, but for prints up to 5x7 or email use we haven't noticed any particular noise issues. The on camera flash provides okay results, not spectacular, as you'd expect from a point and shoot camera. The automatic red-eye reduction software may introduce shutter lag if it decides to take a second exposure, but it doesn't happen often, and generally works pretty well. I personally found the menus to be a bit confusing, but I'm used to another camera, and an acquaintance of mine described the menus on this same camera as "intuitive", so there you go. Battery life seems very good so far, and the camera itself feels solid and well made; switches operate nicely and the built in lens cover operates smoothly with no weird grinding noises like some cheaper P&S cameras I've had occasion to use. I sometimes grab this camera instead of my DSLR if I just want to take a few quick shots.

4 out of 5 stars It's compact and nice   January 9, 2009

Compact and nice. When shoot is hires sometimes it shows lots of pixel. the pictures are not as clear. Overall, it's is a fine, compact camera for everyday use.

3 out of 5 stars Nikon Coolpiz S550 Review   January 9, 2009
Keith D. (Lenexa, KS USA)
The camera works fine, with the exception of the Sports mode, in which several pics are taken in rapid succession. The problem is an old one, that I thought this mode would fix...the pics are all consistently blurred when taking action shots like basketball, etc.

Biggest problem I have is that the Owners Manual states that the accompanying "Nikon Transfer" program disk has to be installed prior to the transfer and viewing of pics stored on the camera. Don't install this...it corrupted my USB device driver, and now my computer will not recognize any new devices attached via USB cable. I called Nikon for assistance, and was told that because the problem lied within my computer, not in the camera that I was on my own. DO NOT INSTALL THE ACCOMPANYING SOFTWARE ON YOUR COMPUTER...USE PICASSA3 OR SOME OTHER PROGRAM TO IMPORT/TRANSFER THE PICS FROM YOUR CAMERA TO YOUR COMPUTER.

4 out of 5 stars Great little digital camera   January 9, 2009
Amazonfan
Don't be deceived by its size. This camera has a variety of great features which took me about a day of experimenting to figure out. Also, it takes great videos. You certainly have to watch and adjust the setting before taking a picture in dim light and when using other features such as nightime and landscape modes, but with so many options there is the potential to take a truely professional picture.
Also, something very useful is that you can alter auto-flash pictures (this is the standard camera mode) AFTER taking them if they appear blurry. It has a long zoom, but after a certain point, the camera stops physically zooming and instead decreases the quality of the photo at the cost of more zoom.
Moreover, it was very easy to transfer photos to the computer. The nikon program works great, but transfering videos can take a couple of minutes.

1 out of 5 stars Great camera, horrible software   January 9, 2009
W. Ziemer (Naperville, IL)
This camera is a fantastic point & shoot. However, there are two things that I feel everyone should know before purchasing this device.

1.) There is NO Vista x64 support (Nikon support confirmed that they are working on getting something out but right now, they are not even close).
2.) It does not use a standard USB cable, its a custom; bulky cable.

Had i known the above, i would NOT have purchased this camera.
