4 out of 5 stars Nice Lens... Disregard the flack   December 2, 2008
L. Segel (Midwest)
I have a D300 and my results with this lens are quite positive, let me tell you. My model will take nice pictures with ANYTHING! All the Nikon DX series are awesome, powerful cameras. The 55-200 lens took nice snapshots of my child moving about in a dimly lit room with a flash. I have seen inspiring, professional results using this lens on a basic D40 kit.

I am not shocked at people discounting this nice zoom lens because it isnt a 200mm fancy portriat lens, or is it simply because it isn't the more favorable VR model. In this case, there is no difference in quality. Awww, No VM? Think of it this way, No VM means less internal parts to break.

The idea is that you buy the accessories that are right for you. It's what you want, not what they want.

The 55-200mm lens compliments any DX series camera. If you have your lighting and your composition set, you are good to go, and you need not worry about taking less than great pictures. You can even achieve even more amazing results with this 55-200m lens using 52mm filters, and when editing in photoshop.

With the money you save, buy a nice 52mm UV & circular polarizer to use with the 55-200.

It is a compact and lightweight zoom lens.

It has the top of the line ED glass.

It is affordable. A retail value of 250.00, it's a deal for [amazon's price] but don't let the cheap price translate as a cheap lens, or that you will get cheap results with the 55-200. Dont let people scare you. You will take nice pictures with this lens, but go ahead buy the 55-200mm VS for a hundred dollars more if it makes you feel better!

; ) lol

The lens while received proved to be defective. Bad contacts cause totally unacceptable irregular performance.
