Product Description This large aperture standard zoom lens covers focal lengths from 24mm and is housed in compact construction. The latest optical design provides an overall length of 94.7cm /3.7inch. It is ideal for general photography such as snapshots, portraiture and landscapes. The Super Multi Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting. ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass, two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements and three aspherical lenses provide excellent correction of all types of aberrations. Superior optical performance is ensured throughout the entire zoom range. This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), ensuring a quiet and high speed AF as well as full time manual focusing capability. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 38cm/15in and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.3. The rounded 9 blades diaphragm creates an attractive blur. It is possible to attach the included petal-type hood to block out extraneous light.

MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT THIS LENS August 25, 2010 Viridiana Serrano (Fontana, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had read more positive than negative reviews about this lens, so I ordered it to do wedding photography. The lens quality is very good except when it comes to the lens hood; it's very thin and bends easily. Overall, the lens barrel is sturdy and compact. In terms of focusing, the lens focuses fast & right on target.
Some people say this lens is soft at F/2.8, but that's exactly the effect you want to create with your aperture wide open. The lens is sharp where you focus at F/2.8, and creates a nice soft focus around you focus point. All the images I took, were of excellent quality & sharpness.
The only major issue I had with the lens was not in terms of quality, or image sharpness. My issue was that the lens barrel was very, very stiff when zooming in & out. I had to apply some force to push it all the way in both directions (in and out). Unfortunately, that's a problem with Sigma lenses, and it seems they're not fixing it. This is a major issue because during wedding photo shoots, it would really slow me down some good 2-4 seconds trying to zoom the lens to get a shot, but also lose my scene.
I returned the lens & got me the Canon L lens (which has a zoom smooth as butter). However, if you won't be doing fast-paced photography, this lens is perfect for you, both in terms of price, quality and construction.
This lens does what I need it to do perfectly June 23, 2010 David L. Lee (VANCOUVER, WA, US) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I needed a good zoom for weddings, I have been using a canon 24 1.4 and Sigma 50 1.4 and shooting at 2.8. The 24-70 gives me the 2.8 I like to shoot at plus the range I like to shoot at. I love the Sigma 50 1.4 on my 7D it gives me the look I want. But inside with more then 2 people in the picture I needed to much room so I stopped to switch to the 24L. The problem I found with primes is after an hr of pictures most people start to get grumpy and dont like any delays and stoping to switch lens is a delay so I got the 24-70 2.8 to cover 95% of my pictures.
I had to set my focus adjust on the 7D to +10 for this lens. With the +10 I have just a tiny bit of FF at 24 and a tiny bit of BF at 70 but you have to be at 100% to see it. For cameras that do not have the focus adjust the +10 would be a large problem so if you dont have FA get the canon or plan on sending it in for adjustment, its worth it :)
A friend ask me to shoot his Hockey game so I used the 24-70 and was very very hapy with the results, out of 66 pictures not one was out of focus. The lens was always in focus. I am not saying it was perfect but it was good enough that you cant tell at 8x10 print size. On my 7D the focus was fast and accurate.
There are some reviews on the net that show this lens has bad corner resolution at 70mm and there are some that show it has better corners then both the Canon and Nikon 24-70's. The corners on my copy are good but not perfect. The Sigma 50 had about the same resolution at 1.4 as the 24-70 at 2.8 but with the 50 at 2.8 its a bit better. The bokeh is ok but the 50 is better. The colors are good on both and the 24-70 has very little CA.

Almost a Sony/Zeiss June 22, 2010 Joseph 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a action sports shooter, I mostly use my Sony 70-200/2.8 for the 'money' shots. Though, I do need a lens that will get a wider angle picture as well as some closeups when the athletes are almost face to face with me. For a over a year I was pretty happy with my Tamron 28-75/2.8 but the focusing was a bit too slow. Please note that the Tamron is an excellent lens. I would rank it's image quality as good as the Sigma. It just focused a milisecond too slow. But if you don't care about a bit faster focus speed, then the Tamron is the 'bang for the buck' lens here. As I was saving up for the Sony/Zeiss lens, I came upon a pro shooter that was using the Sigma 24-70 lens for the same purpose. This photographer is a nationally published sports shooter. To make a long story short, since my photography has to be self-financing I had to be realisic. The Sigma is an extremely sharp lens on my A700 (1.5x crop) at nearly $600 less than the Zeiss. It has met my primary expectation for faster focusing speed than my old Tarmon screw drive focusing lens. The HSM motor is near silent. The zoom ring is fairly stiff but I'm sure that will loosen up with use. The filter size is 82mm so if you want to share filters with other lenses you may be out of luck as most of the other lenses in this class of fast zooms take a 77mm or smaller filter. The only big negative is the zoom works opposite of all my other lenses, the four star rating on ease of use. In fast shooting situations where I'm shooting with the Sony 70-200/G then grab the other camera with the Sigma 24-70, this has casued a few lost shots.
Not sharp...at all June 16, 2010 James S. Yelverton (Asheboro, NC) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I probably just got a bad copy, but boy was it bad. Terrible wide open and not all that sharp stopped down. I was comparing it against some Nikon glass and it just wasn't looking good. I sent it back to Amazon the next day. The quality seemed nice, but I also didn't like the 82mm filter thread. I have a ton of 77mm filters, so this was going to be a pain. I've been told by others that their copy was razor sharp, so maybe I just got unlucky. I think with Sigma it's just kind of a crap shoot.
Absolutely abysmal lens. June 12, 2010 Jack Moody 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
My first suggestion is save your money for a Canon L glass. Do not waste yourtime nor money on the Sigma. I gave it a try and it failed horribly. I took the lens on an test shoot and tested all aperture settings/shutter speed combinations. On all of my photos there was a severe front focus issue. (if you could find a spot in the photo that wasn't so soft it was considered out of focus. The bokeh was like jagged broken glass. at anything below f8 the lens was useless. Anything above that it looked like it was shot with a softening filter on the lens. I returned it to Amazon and promptly ordered the Canon version. Buyer beware of this serious defecient lens.
