| Features:
| • | The standard zoom lens is designed with Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology while retaining the compactness and lightness of previous models. Its stabilization allows sharp hand-held shots at shutter speeds up to four stops slower than otherwise possible | | • | It consists of 11 elements in 9 groups and uses an Aspherical lens element to correct aberration for excellent image quality throughout the zoom range and a circular aperture for exquisite rendering of out-of-focus backgrounds |

Definately worth the money July 1, 2008 muxamed (Sweden) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This lens has excellent image quality, sharpness and colors. The build quality is not top notch but for this price who cares?
Good lense, bad aperture June 25, 2008 Karen Aaker (Colton, CA USA) 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a pretty darn good value. A Canon lens with standard zoom and Image Stabilization. But the largest f stop is 3.5. So the image stabilization and the lack of a large aperture kind of cancel out.
Great bang for the buck!!! June 18, 2008 Cam 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm a recent convert to the SLR arena, though an avid enthusiast now. I was previously shooting a canon powershot S3, but was wanting to more creative than the point and shoot would allow. So I bought a Canon 30D that came with a Tamron 28-80mm AF lens and a sigma 70-210mm. the sigma was not compatible and the canon would give me an error message on 7 out of 10 shots. Those pictures it did take were worse than our old 3.2 mp Sony took. I only say this on the off chance someone reading this might be thinking of purchasing that lens. As I first started shooting with my precious 30d, I was a bit disappointed with the quality of the pics a expected a much greater leap in picture quality beyond my point and shoot. I started to search for a lens that took quality pics and was affordable (I wanted my cake and to eat it too). Needless to say when I reviewed my first few shots with this lens, I started to smile and haven't really stopped yet. I just kept taking comparison shots with both lenses as though I was thinking that it was a fluke that the canons shots were that much better that the Tamron. The pictures shot with the canon were not only a lot sharper but they also had much better color saturation and contrast. The color representation was much closer to the subject than those produced by the Tamron. I am amazed that any of the reviews could be anything but stellar; this leads me to believe that those reviewers are comparing this lens to an L class lens (hardly fair as they cost 3-4x as much). When reviewing this lens we must bear in mind that it's cost is +/- 150$ while it does feels more cheaply built than a L class lens... what would you expect ? I don't feel it's build would put anyone off (a subjective conclusion admittedly). If this lens falls where your budget lies, then buy it and enjoy! Happy shooting
Great go-to lens for the photographer on a budget June 18, 2008 Shepherd Book (Colorado, USA) Nice image quality, useful zoom range, IS works great (I should know, I need it really bad), pretty decent macro, fast autofocus, good build quality, nice and light. Just a great leave-it-on lens for a photographer who isn't swimming in money and doesn't want to haul pounds and pounds of camera equipment around. Sure, there are better lenses out there, but not for this price, with these feature, at this light a weight. It's just what a kit lens should be: everything your average non-professional photographer need.
18-55mm low cost IS Lens Review June 16, 2008 Larry Turner (Minford, Ohio United States) Canon has done their homework on this baby poviding a low cost alternative to Camera's with built in stabilization or their own higher end stabilized lens. I just finished using this lens for a wedding in North Carolina where lighting was very low (mostly candle-light with some moderate over-head fill. I used this along with a 420ex Speedlte for the main ceremony and was impressed with the quick response and the sharp detail of the images. I took over 500 pictures with this lens alone and after reviewing the results I can say the $170 was well worth it. While you're not getting the "L" class glass, you are getting a solid performer at a much lower price. Nothing compares in this price range (Canon, Tamron or Sigma); you have to spend at least $200 more to come close. Bottom line, this is a great low cost lens!
