5 out of 5 stars Very easy to use   August 28, 2008

This is my first camcorder and was purchased to record a new baby. It is very easy to use and produces nice clips. The Easy-Q button sets up the lighting and other settings great!

5 out of 5 stars Good Camera For $250   August 28, 2008
A. Fortier (USA)
Specs: (Not in Amazon's description)
720x480p
Normal - ~1200kbps 30FPS SDEG AVI w/ 22kHz Stereo ADPCM
Fine - ~1800kbps 30FPS SDEG AVI w/ 22kHz Stereo ADPCM
Super Fine - ~4000kbps 30FPS SDEG AVI w/ 22kHz Stereo ADPCM
*Determined with Winamp and Media Player Classic.

If you read the manual it will say:
""Super Fine (about 12Mbps), Fine (about 10Mbps), Normal (about 8Mbps)""
I am not sure what happened at Samsung, or who they employ but this is entirely false judging by this devices output. It may be that it is stepping the bitrates down because I am using a 2GB card, but I strongly doubt it. And why won't they tell us ON THE BOX that it records 22kHz audio?

The normal and fine quality settings both look really bad. The super fine quality setting is decent and performs acceptably in low light when the picture gets grainy. I would consider this to be DVD quality, and would look just fine on a normal television.

SDEG is a MPEG-4 DivX/3ivX like codec by Samsung. I assume it costs quite a bit of money to purchase a license to include a genuine MPEG-4 hardware encoder in your camera. In the box, you will find a CD that includes the codec, but I have found that a third-party codec pack I had installed prior to purchasing this camera included a component that was able to play the videos through any media player on my computer without even having to put the CD in!

As for Linux and Mac OS support, I can't comment about compatibility. If your Linux distro contains or you have installed FFMPEG, the videos MAY play on your computer.

The zoom is smooth and quiet in the sense that I did not hear a motor, but I did hear a faint TV-like ~16000Hz noise.

In general, I don't like digital zoom, but this camera seems to have enough pixels to get pretty close before it becomes blocky, but there is a bit of a dip in the speed of the overall zoom when you hit the end of the optical zoom and the beginning of the digital zoom.

Here are some things you can only learn by using the device:
- You can record with the display closed!
- There is no startup sound, and you can turn off the menu beeps.
- Menu navigation can be a bit slow, but is by no means annoying.
- You can do a slow zoom using the directional pad on the screen.

UPDATE #1
There is a bit of white noise in the audio, and the STEREO MICs pick up wind every so often.

On automatic exposure, I was unable to pick anything up at night, but results are better with the exposure maxed out in manual mode. An addon IR light solves this problem.

Rewind and fast forward in preview mode are a bit slow and choppy but playback is smooth.

Please stay tuned, I have more to cover! (Expect future updates/edits)

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for vacation   August 24, 2008
Wendy Edwards (New Hampshire USA)
Shame on folks complaining about this camera. For its price, it's darn near perfect. Small, light, expandable memory, holds a charge, and does what it should. Set the anti-shake to "on" and you're good to go. If your videos are junk, blame the person behind the camera. We just took it, fresh out of the box, to catch precious memories in Memphis, for Elvis Week. I got more than I expected, especially after reading these reviews prior to our trip. I took videos while driving, and they look just fine! Night time, while walking down Beale at night was a little rough, but it was MY fault. I knew enough to slow down. But even those aren't awful. 99% were what I expected or better. If you spend any time on YouTube, you know what junk looks like. This isn't it. If you want a vacation camera, you can't go wrong with this one. It's so light and small, and is priced quite nicely. Just make certain that you set the anti-shake and buy a large memory card. (But don't try to bring your vacation home with you. Be in the moment. Use it to get moving snapshots or folks talking. Don't try to keep it rolling 75% of the time, otherwise you'll personally miss the moment as it happens, plus you'll bore the crap out of your friends and family.) Love it!!!

4 out of 5 stars I Liked it   August 12, 2008
Sujit Kumar Mahapatra (Cuttack)
Got it yesterday, brought for my fried. I like this camcorder for the value of money. It is very light and easy to use. It looks good too, the battery is not very heavy. Only thing is you have to spend atleast $50 to get a SD card of 16 Gig atleast (Maybe you can look for some deal and buy it cheaper). It comes with Power Director software for video editing.

Overall i liked it.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Camera, Perfect for my needs   July 29, 2008
J. Keezer (Laguna Hills, CA)
The camera has different image resolution settings, on the default (480i) setting, the image quality is terrible, but if you switch to 480p, the image becomes average quality, and the digital blocky artifacts disappear. I am not sure why Samsung (a great company) would mess up the 480i option, then use it as default in a shipping product, but if you switch to 480p all is well.

The zoom is great, the camera seems a bit low on settings, but its compact, lightweight, and records to mpeg4. You will need to download the Samsung codec from Samsung's website, but then its easy to transfer files from the SD card, play them in Windows Media Player, manipulate them in your favorite software, etc.

My primary intention for this camera was to install it on a roll bar in a sportscar, for this purpose, it uses flash memory, few moving parts, the zoom is actually not important, but sound quality is good, and in 'action' setting, with 480p resolution selected, image quality is good. I wish it came with a remote control, but its a simple process to press the record button.

The camera comes with a 512MB card, good for approx 15 minutes of 'high quality' video, and supports up to an 8GB SD card. I purchased a 4GB SD card, which is good for 120 minutes of video, as that is how long the battery lasts, 2 hours.
