Other features include a 160 GB hard drive, quad-mode Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11a/b/g/n), ExpressCard 34 slot, both Memory Stick and SD memory cart slots, and dual-layer DVD RW drive (which also burns CDs). And making your own video masterpiece is easy with the included Sony Movie Story software--just choose the supplied template and professional-looking cutaways, cross-fades and soundtrack syncing are automatically done for you. Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1) includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics - Processor: The 1.86 GHz Intel Pentium T2390 dual-core processor delivers additional computing resources and help expand the PCas capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly. Each core shares 1 MB of L2 cache, and they have a 533 MHz front-side bus. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
- Hard Drive: The 160 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 26,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 2 GB of installed DDR2 RAM (PC4200, 2 x 1024 MB DDR2, 533 MHz) maximizes the capacity for this notebook, and the additional capacity helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card.
- DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 6x for both DVD R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard (2.5mm stroke and 19.05mm pitch) and electro-static two-button touchpad.
Screen, Video & Audio You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 15.4-inch WXGA high-definition screen, with its 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. The XBRITE-ECO technology delivers brilliant colors and stunning clarity with efficient power usage, and it features an anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection and ensure a beautifully clear image from any viewing angle. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which uses shared video memory (up to 358 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 4965AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). This notebook also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (no PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connectivity options: - 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players

What I needed November 30, 2008 Sam I was in the process of replacing my desktop PC. I had to go through three PCs before I got one that worked. The first two I had to keep power cycling it after they locked up(returned them). I decided I needed a laptop for when I was away from home. I decided to go with a brand name I could trust. I ordered the Sony VAIO VGN-NR430E/S 15.4-inch Laptop (1.86 GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2390 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) Silver. Out of the box it worked and the only trouble I had was finding the icon on the desktop to configure the network adapter
An excellent notebook for the price November 15, 2008 Vic I bought this notebook 1 month ago, and it has been running smoothly and cool (I had one that overheated before, that was a major issue; the blue screen of death appeared after a while), it's a very good notebook for the price. If you choose this product, I suggest to look for it on some price comparison engine, [...], you can knock down [...]from that price. I bought it for [...]t best buy. Sony Vaio always has some nice multimedia software pre-installed, although this particular computer also has quite a lot of crapware. If you want to put linux on it if you hate vista, you sure can.
Not that good October 27, 2008 Beaner (North Jersey) I bought this computer several weeks ago and it was just a let down. If you are doing the basics like email, using websites, etc..then this computer will be great for you. I just don't think this computer handles the demands of vista very well and at times it appeared to run slowly for me. I am returning this computer and either getting a better pc laptop or buying an apple.
This computer is truly top of the line October 23, 2008 F. K. Tirrell (Alaska) I love my new computer so much it is a really great price and a great deal I have not had any problems with it and it runs very fast and well. Amazon was the cheapest place I could find it ordering online! I can't describe how great this computer is plus it's a very cute color and just has a nice layout about it, it is the best purchase I have made since I bought my ipod around 3 years ago :)
Nasty reflection in the screen, lack of touch pad on/off button October 19, 2008 ThomasH (Santa Clara, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This laptop was chosen by wife for her work on papers and reports. We liked the perfect finishing, the touch of the keys on the keyboard, but we have overlooked a few quite substantial annoyances: 1) The screen is very glossy, almost glass like, and in many situations it reflects massively light, for example from windows or spot lights. In some conditions you can almost use it as a mirror for personal grooming! Simply stunning that a company like Sony would commit such a blunder. 2) Change of the viewing angle even by as little as 5 degrees changes colors and contrast values quite massively, downright to being unusable for photography and design work. 3) The touch pad is too sensitive and the device lacks an on/off button. At some time my wife dropped the laptop, she could not work at all because for her the cursor would change its location chaotically and erratically. A research of this problem on the Web unveils that numerous users complain about this. The best way around it is to locate the Sony utility called VCCPointingDevice.exe, make a link to it on desktop and use it to manually enable/disable the touch pad. I wish the touch pad could disable itself automatically upon attaching an external mouse, but I found no way to achieve this. Thus do not forget the mouse! We found no "key-only" way to re-enable the touch pad without a mouse! Well, now we know, our next laptop will be better. We will strictly look for a non glossy, non reflective screen, see Dell's as an example, and we will look if the laptop has a touch pad on/off button. These two features are go/no-go criterion, we learned the hard way. If you use laptop for work, don't be fooled by the "sony class" material, looks and finishing. Stay away from this device!!
