SLR Digital Camera
SLR is defined as single lens reflex.
- Single Lens — The camera uses one lens for both taking and viewing..
- Reflex — Internal mirror that moves and makes the single lens possible.
What Are Some Benefits?
-
With a SLR digital camera, what you see is what you get. Looking through the same lens means that the same image will appear on the viewfinder and media card. For serious photographers, a SLR digital camera, through the lens viewfinder provides a better perspective. You won't get parallax errors found on point and shoot models.
Parallax errors occur because the eye sees the subject through different optics (the viewfinder, or a second lens) than the one through which the photo is taken. As the viewfinder is often found above the lens of the camera, photos with parallax error are often slightly lower than intended. - A SLR digital camera, can have detachable lenses. Each lens is designed for a unique purpose (ex. close up, long distance, portrait). These lenses have higher quality optics which create incredibly sharp photos.
- On many SLRs, you can preview the depth of field prior to taking the shot, by stopping down the lens to its taking aperture. The viewfinder image becomes darker but you can see exactly what parts of the picture will be in focus and what will not.
What Are Some Challenges?
- A SLR digital camera along with lenses makes it bulky and heavy to carry.
- The mirror mechanism adds a few extra problems with camera shake. The rapid movement of the mirror swinging out of the way can cause vibrations (an effect known as mirror slap) that add to camera shake when you are taking a picture. With normal shutter speeds this effect is rarely a problem but with longer exposures it can cause an image to slightly less sharp than it might otherwise be.
