Image Stabilization, Vibration Reduction Digital Cameras

Imagine capturing the right moment then realizing after reviewing the picture that it turned out to be just a big blur!

I don't know about you but this has happened to me many times. Digital camera manufacturers have come up with a solution to this problem by introducing products that help keep the image sharp and in focus. This is often referred to as:

  • Image Stabilization (IS) - Canon
  • Vibration Reduction (VR) - Nikon
  • Anti Shake - Casio and Konica Minolta
This feature gives cameras and lenses the ability to reduce blur and help you create sharp images. The major manufacturers use similar technology but slightly different names.

What Causes Blurry Pictures?

When you press the shutter release button to create a shot, the shutter opens to let the right amount of light on the camera's sensor. If the shutter speed is slow this increases the risk of "motion blur" when your hand isn't steady.

The solution is to place the camera on a sturdy platform, such as a tripod or use a faster shutter speed. Sometimes, neither option is very good. Image stabilization allows you to increase the quality of the photo without the use of a tripod or faster shutter.

I currently own two VR (vibration reduction) lenses for my Nikon D200 and totally amazed at how well this equipment performs. With the VR function set to "on", I can take shots at 3 stops slower. For example, if the correct speed is 1/500s, I can reset the shutter to 1/60s! I recommend Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson to better understand the concept of shutter speed. This is great reading for any photography enthusiast.
